CoL launches two-year law degree

updated on 27 January 2011

The College of Law is to launch a new two-year LLB law degree which will focus on improving students' job prospects by honing their practical legal skills. The course - which will start from September 2012 - is designed to equip students with the core skills for legal practice, with analysis, problem-solving, drafting and research at the core of the teaching programme.

Students will be able to choose to study one of two routes - to focus on either how the law affects people or how it affects businesses. There will also be strong emphasis on employability, with students taking part in workshops designed to help them appreciate and exploit the career opportunities open to them in the ever-changing legal services market.

CoL chief executive Nigel Savage said: "Our law degree is about the practical development of knowledge and skills. Students will learn legal principles in a contemporary, applied and integrated manner examining how law affects society and is used to assist and resolve matters. They will develop a better overall practical understanding of how the law works, rather than simply studying its historical development. This represents a new approach to legal studies, which will give students the best possible start to their careers, whether in the legal profession or other areas of business."

Initially, the course will operate from the college's Chester, Birmingham and London locations, but there are plans in the pipeline to roll out the LLB to all seven of the college's UK centres.
