The second Law Society free public debate of 2012 will focus on intellectual property and ambush marketing, which are both hot topics this year as a result of the European football championships (Euro 2012) and the impending London Olympic Games.
The event is the result of a partnership between the Law Society and Huffington Post UK, and will see an expert panel analyse ambush marketing and the way IP laws work in business and sponsorship contexts. The most recent example of ambush marketing – the advertising strategy whereby non-sponsors of an event use its attendant publicity to boost their profile – was the incident at Euro 2012 in which Danish player Nicklas Bendtner revealed the name of an unofficial advertiser on his underwear after scoring. There has also been great pressure to avert an incidence of this at the forthcoming Olympic Games.
The panel consists of leading expert speakers including Arthur Artinian of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (official legal services provider to London 2012), Pierre Williams of the Federation of Small Businesses, Sarah Hadland of Boyes Turner LLP and Mark Blayney Stuart, head of research at the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Students are encouraged to attend the debate, which is being held on 3 July at 6:30pm. If you’re interested, you can book your free place here.
