Charity plans events to raise funds for legal advice centres

updated on 20 January 2012

With London's free legal advice centres closing at the rate of one a month towards the end of 2011, the London Legal Support Trust (LLST) is planning to hold several events in 2012 to raise funds to prevent further closures throughout the year. The organisation says it will need to beat last year’s £600,000 total to make a real difference.

Kicking things off, the walk season starts on 18 and 19 February, when Lord Phillips (president of the Supreme Court) will lead hundreds of walkers on a 40-mile hike along the Thames from Canary Wharf to Hampton Court. Each day will see 20 miles covered and walkers can elect to do just one day or both. Sponsors include Jordans, the Bar Council, the Law Society, ILEX and BPP Law School. Then, on 21 May, the LLST will run its annual 10-kilometre walk around London, which last year saw over 5,000 walkers raise £497,000.

In addition to land-based fundraising, dozens of lawyers will be throwing themselves out of an aeroplane in the interests of justice at the LLST skydive on 25 February.

In the regions, there are now legal walks in most large cities to support local legal advice agencies, running between May and September. And in October, there will be a Halloween Ball at the Law Society.
