Training review calls for profession to prioritise ethics

updated on 19 July 2012

The Legal Education and Training Review (LETR) has resolved to make ethics central to the legal profession following a well-attended symposium in Manchester, which focused on the emerging issues from the review.

Speaking to Legal Futures, LETR lead researcher Professor Julian Webb said that the main imperatives to take from the review are to ensure that:

  • there is a basic level of competence and quality among legal service providers;
  • the prospects and professional status of the country’s growing number or paralegals are boosted; and
  • "values and ethics are at the core of legal services".

The LETR will publish its main findings and recommendations at the end of the year with the expectation that the profession's regulating bodies will take them forward, while the review's next discussion paper is due to be published by the end of July.
