Survey investigates working lives of barristers

updated on 15 June 2011

The Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board (BSB) have commissioned a survey of barristers' working lives, the results of which (expected in the autumn) will be used to inform organisations' short, medium and long-term strategic planning. Although the Bar Council already collects and disseminates data on the profession, it is hoped that this survey will provide a fuller picture of the working habits of barristers. The survey will be repeated every two years.

Bar Chairman Peter Lodder QC said: "This survey is very timely, coming during a period of significant change across the legal landscape. For the first time, we will be able to generate a holistic picture of barristers' working lives - from their job satisfaction to their hopes and plans for the future - which will prove invaluable to our work in promoting a world-class justice system."

BSB Chair Baroness Ruth Deech said: "If we are to continue to regulate the Bar in a way that is meaningful and valuable to both the public and our members, it is vital that we gain a better understanding of how barristers view their professional lives and their future. I look forward to using the forthcoming data to inform and shape our future policy and practice."
