Student pro bono is on the rise

updated on 14 April 2011

The most recent LawWorks Student Pro Bono Report has revealed that more students than ever before are involved in pro bono work. The survey quizzed 111 law schools in England and Wales, finding that more than 65% of students take part in pro bono activity of some description. This is an increase of 40% since the last report was conducted in 2006 and following a three-year LawWorks student pro bono project funded by the Law Society.

LawWorks chief executive Rebecca Hilsenrath said: "The results are testament to the commitment and enthusiasm of students, law school staff and their pro bono partners. The extent of activity is particularly impressive in light of the complete absence of available funding in nearly a third of the relevant academic institutions. Our feedback suggests that the support provided to law schools by the LawWorks Students Project has significantly contributed to the growth in activity and we are hugely grateful to the Law Society for funding it."

Information about the pro bono projects of particular law schools can be found in the database held at www.studentprobono.net.
