CoL to target aspiring lawyers in Asia

The College of Law (CoL) is in talks with the Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) to open a campus in Singapore later this year, in a move that will see the CoL become the first British law school to establish a campus in Asia.

The plans are a response to the demands of the CoL's law firm clients, which include Linklaters, Baker & McKenzie and Clifford Chance - all international firms evidently intending to broaden their recruitment pool of talent into Asia. As reported in Legal Week, the Singapore campus will hope to attract the large numbers of aspiring lawyers in Singapore, as well as from further afield.

Simon Johnson, trainee partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, said: "This move reflects a growing trend for firms recruiting on a more international basis. It is important for the legal sector to take a more international approach to education and become more mobile in this respect if we want to attract the top candidates from across the world stage."
