I attended LawCareersNetLIVE Manchester during my second year as a law undergraduate at Edge Hill University. As someone who wants to succeed in law, I applied to this event with the goals of developing my commercial awareness, enhancing my employability and showing how committed I am to my legal career.
Throughout the event I was encouraged to engage and network with a range of firms. Each firm was very welcoming and helpful during the day.
The legal sector can be challenging when feeling a sense of ‘imposter syndrome’. However, LawCareersNetLIVE 2023 keynote speaker and managing partner at Brabners LLP Nik White changed my perception of this. By expressing the importance of learning to love imposter syndrome and to view it as a way to ensure you remain humble, Nik helped me to embrace such feelings and not let them limit my potential.
During his speech, Nik went on to recall his journey from trainee solicitor to managing partner. This was inspiring to hear and signified that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. It also clarified for me that Brabners is the law firm I’d like to succeed in.
Following the keynote speech, I attended a panel discussion with partners and senior lawyers on the topic of ‘the law firm as a business’. This expanded my commercial awareness and understanding of how law firms function as a business, and how they benefit from doing so.
Throughout the day I took part in two firm-led workshops, the first being an introduction to banking hosted by DWF Group Limited. In this session we discussed with partners and trainee solicitors what banking law is like in practice and we dissected a case study on a real estate finance transaction. The second workshop, hosted by Brabners, focused on sports and employment law. This involved multiple discussions on issues such as transgender participation in sport and the impact sport has on the environment.
Each workshop allowed me to gain deeper insights into unique practice areas. Although this was slightly challenging at times due to not knowing a lot about the areas discussed, each law firm was very helpful and created a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Overall, LawCareersNetLIVE is an amazing event and I’m very grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend. I believe that the event has enhanced my employability and that it was a great way to express my dedication to a career in law in applications and interviews. Furthermore, the event was a fantastic opportunity to expand my network and develop connections, many of whom I’ve remained in contact with.
Since attending events like LawCareersNetLIVE, where I was able to demonstrate my commitment to a legal career and to engage with law firms, I’m delighted to share that I’ve recently accepted a 2026 training contract offer from Brabners! I hope to inspire others that anything is possible when you believe in yourself and that applying to events like this will positively impact your future – like it has mine.
I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in a career in law to apply to LawCareersNetLIVE.
