Brenda Hale has today been sworn in as president of the Supreme Court, the first woman ever to have held the position. The appointment was announced in July by Downing Street.

Hale has enjoyed an extremely varied career, including as a lecturer, reformer and judge. She was appointed as deputy president of the Supreme Court in 2013 and has ruled over a number of significant cases, including the Brexit appeal.

Lord Mance, who was sworn in as her deputy, said of Hale: “She has been and is a role model for many, as well as a tireless promoter of women as well as other under-represented groups in the judiciary and among lawyers.” Three other new judges were also appointed, including a second female justice, Lady Black.
