Law schools hike fees

updated on 17 February 2011

It's bad news for cash-strapped aspiring lawyers as postgraduate providers increase their GDL, LPC and BPTC fees, with BPP Law School charging the most for all three courses. The cost of BPP's BPTC has risen this year to £15,750, while at The College of Law (CoL) and Kaplan Law School the fees have increased to £15,375 and £15,450 respectively.

Commenting in Lawyer 2B on the rising cost, BPP dean Peter Crisp said: "The increase in the BPTC fees this year reflects the resource-heavy nature of the programme. For example, we now teach advocacy in small groups of four students to one tutor - we believe that our staff-to-student ratio is unmatched by other providers. Our GDL and LPC fees were frozen last year and haven't increased since 2009. With a modest increase this year, overall the percentage increase in fees over the last two years for these programmes has been below the rate of inflation."

The LPC has also gone up in price at all three institutions; BPP is now charging £12,900, the CoL £12,550 and Kaplan, £12,295. GDL fees have not escaped the fee hike either; the course at BPP will set you back by £8,950, at the CoL £8,870 and at Kaplan £8,400.
